BDS or Bachelor in Dental Surgery is the only approved dental course in India. It focuses on training the students and introducing them to dental surgeries and sciences. BDS is a five year dental program which includes four years of in-class education and one year of internship. It is one of the most sought-after courses after MBBS in the health sector.

What is BDS?

BDS or Bachelor in Dental Surgery is a five year undergraduate program which is compulsory for students who aspire to practice dentistry in private or government hospitals. Students are required to register themselves in DCI or the Dental Council of India. 

For those who want to apply, it is compulsory for students to pass 10+12 examinations with at least 85% marks. As per the Dental Council of India, there are 315 colleges offering nearly 26000 seats across the country that offer Bachelor in Dental Surgery.

In BDS, students are taught about dental problems, dentures as well as surgeries. The course includes one year of compulsory internship in the dentistry programme.

BDS Admission Process

The following are the major highlights regarding admission to a BDS programme:

  • Students who want to pursue BDS must clear NEET examination which is held across the country. Since 2016, NEET has been made compulsory for admission to courses such as MBBS, BDS, etc.
  • Students who wish to apply in a BDS programme must have attained at least 50% marks in 10+12 examinations. 
  • Candidates are allowed to apply only if they meet all the eligibility criterions.
  • After qualifying the entrance exams and other criterions, there is a three round counselling session held by the college.

BDS Eligibility Criteria

The following are the basic eligibility criterions for admission to a BDS course:

  • Students who wish to apply must have cleared 10+2 exams with at least 50% marks from a university or institute.
  • It is compulsory to clear 10+12 examinations with subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
  • Admissions are based on the student’s result of NEET. They must clear the exam with the required cut-off for application.

BDS Entrance Exams

Admission to BDS courses is based on the results of NEET examinations. NEET is a national level examination for admissions to several undergraduate medical courses such as BDS, MBBS, BAMS, etc. Students are required to visit the official website of the college and keep themselves updated with the registration dates.
